A team of researchers in the UK have created a “probiotic pill” which contains live bacteria that they believe could help reduce blood glucose levels in the body. Diabetes occurs when the levels of glucose in the bloodstream gets too high. The new research suggests using live bacteria to “rewire” how the body works by utilizing the connection between gut bacteria and peptides that maintain insulin levels. The study was performed on diabetic rats for 90 days and showed incredible progress when it came to lowering blood glucose levels.

One of the main issues with people living with Type-1 diabetes is the fact their body doesn’t produce insulin naturally, which is needed to manage blood glucose levels in the body. A new study is looking to remedy this problem by manufacturing stem cells that can produce insulin. Developed over the course of 15 years by researchers at Harvard University, the team has achieved the ability to make tens of millions of these beta cells and hope they can begin human trials over the next couple years.

Researchers in Ireland at Maynooth University have been studying anti-diabetic compounds that mimic the effects of vigorous exercise has on the body when it comes to lowering blood sugar levels. While there are still several more years of study, the belief is the compounds could be developed into a treatment for Type-2 diabetes that’s more effective than what’s available today.
5. Pancreatic Cell Transplant
Over 1.25 million Americans suffer from Type-1 diabetes and a new study may be on the verge of a cure. This breakthrough treatment involves transplanting healthy pancreatic cells into a diabetic patient with the hopes the new cells multiply and counteract the immune system’s attack on the pancreas. Several successful trials have already been conducted on mice with the hopes of moving to human trials in 2017.
4. Betatrophin
A team of scientists at Harvard University discovered that the hormone
betatrophin can trigger the pancreas to produce insulin cells when the body needs it the most. The hope is that by injecting someone who lives with Type-1 diabetes with the hormone, it will cause the pancreas to produce insulin when needed, and maintain blood glucose levels naturally.
3. Artificial Pancreas Device
The artificial pancreas is a breakthrough system that could help people living with Type-1 Diabetes so they no longer have to take insulin shots on a daily basis. The device is implanted into the abdomen and monitors blood glucose levels, while releasing insulin on an “as needed” basis. The research is being conducted at the Atlanta Diabetes Association with trials expected to be completed at the end of 2016 with FDA approval expected for 2017.
2. T-Reg Cell Injections
Researchers in California have found a way to remove healthy T-reg cells, which are responsible for producing insulin in the pancreas, from a non-diabetic and inject them into a Type-1 diabetic in an effort to stimulate the production of insulin. The study found that they could multiply millions of these immune cells outside of the body and inject them into a patient suffering with Type-1. Currently, trials are underway with hopes for advanced testing in late 2016.

A new method of transferring insulin into the body has been developed in the form of a powdered insulin called Afrezza. The medication is inhaled through an inhaler before meal times and allows people suffering with Type-1 diabetes to easily administer their insulin without having to do daily injections.
