Vieira Disgusted By Wenger’s Attitude – Petit Posted: 30 Aug 2016 11:20 PM PDT Emmanuel Petit has hit out at Arsene Wenger and Arsenal, stating Patrick Vieira is disgusted with the treatment from his ex-manager. Petit and Vieira both won the EPL in 1997-98, but Petit has questioned why a couple of club legends have not been handed coaching opportunities with the Gunners. The likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Tony Adams and Vieira have had to start their coaching career at other clubs, after they were not offered comfortable roles at Arsenal. And Petit admits that Vieira is the most unhappy at not being given the chance to work alongside Wenger following his retirement. Speaking to SFR, he said: “Why didn’t Arsene open the door to Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira or Tony Adams? “Arsene couldn’t imagine that anyone would criticise him openly on television, never mind a former Arsenal player. “It is good to build statues to commemorate history. but at some point you have to open the doors to help them. “When I see Dennis Bergkamp on Ajax’s bench, it doesn’t bother me, but I remember Dennis has a son in Arsenal’s academy. “I was with Patrick two days before he went to the USA. There was an event organised by Manchester City in January, and I was one of four players invited by Patrick. “I spoke with Patrick for two hours and I can say – and maybe he will not be happy that I am saying this in public – he is really disgusted by Arsenal & Arsene’s attitude.” The post Vieira Disgusted By Wenger’s Attitude – Petit appeared first on 360Nobs.com. |
Guardiola: Barcelona Plays Better Than Everyone Posted: 30 Aug 2016 11:15 PM PDT Pep Guardiola has nothing but praise for his former side, Barcelona, as Manchester City prepare to face them. The Spaniard’s Manchester City has been grouped with Barcelona in the group stages KC the UCL. This will be Guardiola’s third and fourth fixture against Barcelona, since leaving the club. He recorded a 5-3 aggregate loss against the Catalan club in the semifinals of the UCL. “Is [facing Barca] sooner than I expected? It’s whatever comes your way. We always have to play the best, and there is no one better than them,” the 45-year-old told Catalan radio station Tot Costa. “The three up front can make you so unbalanced but there is also so much work behind the scenes.” “How Barcelona play, you note that there is so much work that has gone into it from Luis Enrique, and they will keep doing it in the coming years. “They are the best and it is a great test for us. We’ve been given this challenge and we have to see what level we bring. “But [Borussia] Monchengladbach also worries me. Today the Champions League starts in the first stage, not the quarter-finals. You can’t make any errors. “But it is always lucky to be able to return to Camp Nou and reacquaint yourself with friends.” The post Guardiola: Barcelona Plays Better Than Everyone appeared first on 360Nobs.com. |
Griezmann Wants France To Forget About Euro 2016 Posted: 30 Aug 2016 11:10 PM PDT Antoine Griezmann has asked France to put memories of the Euro 2016 behind them, as they prep for the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign. The Atletico Madrid forward was the highest goal scorer at the tournament, scoring six goals as Les Bleus made it to the final, only to lose 1-0 to Portugal. Deschamps will play Italy in a friendly, before taking on Russia and Belarus in the World Cup qualifying campaign. And Atletico Madrid star Griezmann expects themselves to pick themselves up, stating: “I think we have to forget the Euro. “We must move on. We must think about the World Cup, which is our goal. You have to put aside the Euro. It was beautiful, it was in France, but we must move on. “It’s not because we were in the final of Euro that we will qualify for the World Cup. We must now think about winning matches.” The post Griezmann Wants France To Forget About Euro 2016 appeared first on 360Nobs.com. |

Golovkin Wants Billy Saunders After Kell Brook Posted: 30 Aug 2016 02:38 PM PDT Gennady Golovkin will be happy to go back to England and face Saunders, should be beat Kell Brook on September 10. The unbeaten Kazakh will face Kell Brook at the O2 Arena in London, with his three world middleweight titles on the line. Saunders has not gotten in the ring since winning his WBO title from Andy Lee. After which he reportedly turned down a chance to fight Golovkin. But Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, says making a fight with Saunders will be one of the top priorities, so long as the California-based Kazakhstan boxer defends his WBA, WBC and IBF titles against Brook, who is stepping up two weight classes for his shot. “From our perspective we hope the fight with Saunders can happen because Gennady’s goal is to unify all the belts in the middleweight division,” Loeffler told ESPN. “We still hold out hopes that the fight with Billy Joe Saunders, or whoever is WBO champion, could be made later this year or early next year. “Canelo [Alvarez] was the first priority and we were working on it since Canelo won the WBC title. It was one thing for Canelo talking about fighting Gennady, but he has decided to move back down a division and he has got a lot of criticism for doing that. “But I believe that fight will happen in 2017 and it will be the biggest fight in boxing.” Golovkin’s manager, Max Hermann, says a fight against Saunders would happen in the UK. “We tried to do Billy Joe Saunders fight, but it didn’t work out, but we’re still interested because he has the last world title belt,” Hermann told ESPN. “If we can make the fight in the future, we would because Gennady’s aim has always been to unify the division, win all the belts. From our point of view we made a very good offer but he rejected it. In the future, maybe at the end of the year or next year, it could happen. “Of course, he could go to the UK for this fight. Last time we had negotiations with Frank Warren it was clear that the fight would happen in the UK. From our point of view, we didn’t try to make the fight in the US. We said we would come to the UK, no problem.” The post Golovkin Wants Billy Saunders After Kell Brook appeared first on 360Nobs.com. |
Dellavedova Targeting Playoffs For Bucks Posted: 30 Aug 2016 02:26 PM PDT NBA star Matthew Dellavedova is hoping to fit into a more leadership role at Milwaukee Bucks and lead them to the playoffs. The Australian basketball star helped the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first NBA title, and was later traded to the Bucks. “Leaving Cleveland was tough because I had a great three years there and they gave me my first opportunity,” Dellavedova told ESPN. “Winning the title is going to give you a bond with those guys for life, and the way the city embraced me made leaving even harder. “But I’m excited about the opportunity in Milwaukee, especially to step into a bit more of a leadership role. Obviously at Cleveland we had Kyrie [Irving] being the point guard which puts a ceiling on what you can achieve.” A significant motivator behind Dellavedova signing with the Bucks was the opportunity to work closely with head coach Jason Kidd, someone the Australian has long admired. “To be able to learn from one of the greatest point guards of all time in Jason Kidd is going to be cool, and something I’m really excited about. “I cannot wait.” The post Dellavedova Targeting Playoffs For Bucks appeared first on 360Nobs.com. |
The Igbos: Why Are They Still Biafrans? Posted: 30 Aug 2016 01:33 PM PDT The Igbos: Why Are They Still Biafrans?, By Adagbo Onoja In his latest book, We Are All Biafrans, Chido Onumah offers a very powerful discourse of Nigeria by imposing on the observable claims of marginalisation by every other group against the Nigerian State the metaphor of Biafranism. Every other group is selling that narrative about its own place in the Nigerian set up. In other words, they are doing what the Igbos took to a very high level in the late 1960s by declaring sovereignty, a move to which the Nigerian State responded by declaring a police action.
The rest is now history. 'Biafran' in that title is thus a loaded metaphor in the hands of the author, an unrepentant advocate of the renegotiation of Nigeria but not the secessionist which some readers imagine him to be, either because of the coincidence of his book with the renewed agitation for Biafra or from what the title of his book, particularly the word 'Biafra', has come to denote in popular consciousness in Nigeria. Of course, the agitation of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) makes it the second time the Igbo cultural identity would be associated with contesting the Nigerian State, although some people argue that this time around, it is the Biafranism of the 'Generation Text'. Members of 'Generation Text' have no idea of the horrors of the 1960s. Whether the 'Generation Text' explanation of this phase of Igbo irredentism is true or not, it still makes the Igbos the most Biafranist group in Nigeria. That should throw up the 'why' question. What might be there in the Igbo gene to account for the dialectics of Igboness in Nigeria: the unchallenged warriors of the Nigerian space in territorial terms but the quickest to get sucked into homeland insularity at the slightest provocation? How could so educated, so successful in business and so globally mobile and established an ethnic group misread the Nigerian text every now and then? It is a question that would always be open to debate. Three major explanations remain most often the case. Taken in no particular order, there is the argument that Igbos are reacting to what they perceive as punishment for challenging the Nigerian State. There could be a different list now but around the late 1990s, those who were very educated in this would articulate the case of systematic marginalisation by saying, for example, that the Igbos are the exception in terms of a city which when shut down amounts to shutting down Nigeria. That is, they have no Lagos, Kano or Port-Harcourt which corresponds to the South-West/Yoruba, North/Hausa-Fulani and South-South. Those who argue this agree that Onitsha is an emporium but would say that Onitsha does not have the strategic value of Kaduna or Oshogbo. There is no export free zone, airport, power plant, refinery or educational institution of stature in the East, it is pointed out. And they say that it was the anger over this that certain institutions such as the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Enugu and even Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, were built. With respect to the citing of industries, there is a strong feeling that the now moribund Aluminum Smelter Company at Ikot Abasi was originally earmarked for somewhere in the East. And that it is the powers that be that removed it. And then the biggest of the sense of marginalisation: Igbos having five states. As far as this is concerned in the popular Igbo consciousness, population and landmass can go to hell. As with perceptions, these claims do not have to be empirically verifiable to get an Igboman worked up and ready to swear marginalisation. In social life, what is perceived is what moves men to action. As such, very few are interested in linking claims of marginalisation to its plausible contexts. Of course, the war is an explanation. The historical tendency to 'punish' those who took up arms against the state cannot be dismissed but so also can it not be dismissed that the same Nigeria made room for an Igboman to become the Vice-President under a gentle president and a very organised party in terms of the sharing of projects. Recall that when the Yorubas complained in 1981 that nothing was going to them, Chief Adisa Akinloye, Richard Akinjide and other members of the regional caucus put them to task by calling a news conference and disclosing all the projects and appointments that had accrued to that region. So, what might have happened to the Igbos under NPN? The second thesis says that the Igbos are stuck with a collective self-understanding whose non-realisation makes them angry with Nigeria. No one is sure what that could be. Contributors point to the discourse of the Igbos as the Jews of Africa. The notion of 'Zik of Africa' is supposed to capture this dream of Igbos being the most industrious of the lot and, by implication, those who would be the most prosperous as a collectivity. Theories are never correct or incorrect as such because theories could pull surprises in time and space. As such, we might still have to wait for a more serious study of this thesis as to whether to dismiss it or not. But one question that it would attract is how one ethnic group in any country in Africa could, in and of itself, break out of the iron curtain of under-development enveloping the entire continent, a continent which is basically still the playground of the powerful? Lastly, there is the argument that explains why Igbos are still Biafrans in the Igbos never having run an empire. In an empire, you are either the conquered or the conqueror. Whichever one it is requires knowledge of the management of power. That is, knowledge of how to ensure that the conquered remains in acceptance of their reality or, if you are the conquered, then the knowledge of how to organise resistance, negotiate accommodation on some issues and fight your way on others. Products of empires are, therefore, assumed to be more adept in such attributes. In other words, it is not required that an ethnic group must have run an empire before the colonialists came around but empire teaches a lot about the complexity of power, its negotiation and its consolidation. Empire is about what the wise Africanist professor of power would call the layers of the onion. The 'layers of the onion' analysis tasks the power operator to look into each layer of the larger entity in contestation. It could reveal what the grand concepts can never reveal. The argument here is the Igbos who have always lived as republicans lack the patience of their empire minded co-operators on the Nigerian scene – the Yorubas, the Binis, the Kanuris, the Hausa Fulanis, the Jukunawas and what have you. Unlike their Others, Igbos had never come under the authority of any other groups until the colonial encounter. In Achebe's Umofia, every man was a sovereign. He needed the solidarity of the community, age grades and circle of friends but he was a self-referential player in each of those networks, not a non-person in their dynamics. In other words, the past might be weighing heavily on the present for the Igbos in Nigerian politics. The point has been made about how theories are neither correct nor wrong as such because the theory that is discredited by the evidence of today could provide the most powerful explanation by the evidence of tomorrow. There is, therefore, nothing to quarrel about in respect of each of these three theories regarding current Igbo return to Biafranism. The claim of neglect might be easier for people to grasp, although that could equally be the weakest explanation. The real question would seem to be how it happened that no force, no tendency and no stream of consciousness in Igboland could enforce a binding narrative of the perceived situation of the Igbos and impose such on national politics? The Igbos are not too weak in the politics of discourse and by which it could have made its narrative to be heard globally. Why an IPOB strategy and the associated risk of deepening the perception that Igbos cannot be cured of the Biafran virus? Perhaps, there is a generational challenge here. It is possible that the time has come for the Chido Onumahs to take up these issues at the level of the language game. This is not to overthrow the old guard but to enrich the struggle they have waged so far. It is a challenge that arises not for just our intellectual workers and activists of Igbo origin but everyone within the Onumah generational bracket because Nigeria itself is in a dangerous vacuum in terms of a discourse of the country that can move the average Nigerian. Imagine an Arab Spring type revolt in Nigeria today. It would be nothing but pure anarchy because there is no referential narrative that would guide it and it could degenerate quickly into aimless bloodshed rather than a purposive exercise towards the realisation of the slogan, 'Another Nigeria is Possible'. Adagbo Onoja, a journalist, writes from Abuja. He can be reached through adagboonoja@gmail.com

The panel had deemed the elbow as a deliberate attempt to hurt Reid, though referee Andre Marriner had claimed to not see the incident. A statement released by the FA read: "Sergio Aguero has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video. Suicidal Man Jumps Into River After Chanting “Buhari” Posted: 30 Aug 2016 10:00 AM PDT A suicidal man dived into a river after chanting the name of the Nigerian president, “Buhari” several times. The man jumped into the body of water on the Mile Two bridge in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area on Monday, August 29 and was rescued by a passing speed boat. Luckinson Akpos for Flattimes said the unidentified man who is in his 40s, “stood on the bridge for some minutes.. loudly expressed bitterness over his sufferings.” The site added that the unnamed man felt “things had gone bad for him” and he felt helpless. “He…. mentioned Buhari repeatedly, muttered some other words before he finally took the terrible decision,” Luckinson reported. Akpos added that an observer named Mr Andy Odiaka confirmed he witnessed the incident from the onset. Odiaka said, "I was there on the bridge where the man was also standing. He was speaking to himself. He said he had no transport fare to move from one place to another.” “He said his suffering was too much that he could hardly feed. I also heard him saying life was meaningless to him.” “He mentioned Buhari many times, and the next thing I saw, the man jumped from the bridge into the water.” "He is an Igbo man because he was speaking the language. I thought he was joking when he said he was tired of everything around him. If not for a speedboat that was passing, he would have died.” “The boat stopped and the passengers dragged him to the riverbank and they continued their journey.” "Thereafter, nobody was ready to assist him. People simply looked at him, expressed sympathy and continued their journey. I have to call an emergency number.” The Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, got to the scene of events and its officials were able to resuscitate him. All the man had in his pockets was N90. Police In Barricade As #BringBackOurGirls Activists March To Buhari With Sealed Lips [Photos] Posted: 30 Aug 2016 09:36 AM PDT Once again, officers of the Nigerian Police Force have not only prevented the Bring Back Our Girls group from gaining access into Aso Rock to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari, but may have ensured that their lips were sealed with tapes in what was described as a ''silent march.''. ![]() The activists, who were advocating for the release of the Chibok schoolgirls – that were kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists, 869 days ago – were seen today marching in silent as they aim to press their demands for the rescue of the missing girls. We cannot categorically ascertain if the group decided to have their lips ‘voluntarily’ sealed or they were pressured to do so, but one thing we can tell is, as they approached the presidential palace, they were met by a police barricade.
While reminding the government that today August 30, marked the 869th day the girls had been held in captivity, the police officers were spotted to have created a blockade in standoff.
One of its conveners, Obiageli Ezekwesili, said: ''It is criminal and totally unacceptable for our IDPs to have to protest because of poor feeding at the camps,''
Some of the inscriptions the protesters held read, 'Mr President, no more delay,' 'Mr. President, Act Now, We Want Results' and 'Mr. President, Decide NOW!' The post Police In Barricade As #BringBackOurGirls Activists March To Buhari With Sealed Lips [Photos] appeared first on 360Nobs.com. |
