Lakers Coach Luke Walton Doesn’t Know First Five

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 11:42 PM PDT

Just a couple hours before the Los Angeles Lakers kick off their 2016-17 preseason opener at Anaheim.

However, head coach Luke Walton has stated he does not the first five players he’ll field against the Sacramento Kings.

"I don't know," Walton said Monday when asked to name his starting unit. "We'll figure it out before game time."

When asked if Julius Randle were the favorite to start at power forward, Walton admitted that there are frontrunners for certain positions, but as of now the race for starting spots is open.

"We don't know our starters yet," he said. "We'll figure it out later today. It's open. I have an idea of who the frontrunners are, but we haven't really sat down to make the final decision on that yet."

If Monday’s practice is any indication, though, the Lakers will roll with their projected starting five: D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson in the backcourt, Luol Deng and Randle at the forward spots, and Timofey Mozgov at center.

Cesare Prandelli Lays about His Plans After Being Appointed Valencia Manager

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 11:40 PM PDT

New Valencia coach Cesare Prandelli wants to take the “glorious club” back to enjoying a starring role in La Liga and Europe, he said on Monday.

The 59-year-old Italian has signed a contract until June 2018 with the Spanish club, becoming their ninth coach since 2012.

They fired Pako Ayestaran two weeks ago after registering the worst record of any coach in the club’s 98-year history, taking 10 points from 12 games after taking over from Gary Neville in March.

“My aim is to find a balance which is currently lacking,” Prandelli told a news conference on Monday at the Mestalla stadium. “I want to transmit to the players the values of this club.

Neither Ayestaran nor Neville had any coaching experience, which is in stark contrast to Prandelli, a former Fiorentina and Italy coach.

During his five-year spell at Fiorentina, Prandelli guided the team to fourth place in Serie A and to the round of 16 in the 2009-10 Champions League.

He led Italy to a runners-up finish at Euro 2012 before resigning after the team’s first-round exit at the 2014 World Cup. He coached Galatasaray before leaving the Turkish club in November 2014 and has not managed a team since.

“For me it’s an honour to be in such a glorious club and we want to take it back there.”

Ander Herrera Gets First Spain Call Up

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 11:34 PM PDT

Ander Herrera might be getting his first international start with Spain’s national team, after he was included in the world cup qualifiers squad.

The Manchester United man has previously played for Spain in the U-21 and U-23 class, but has not been picked at the senior level.

However, his showing in the EPL has prompted his selection to the squad to face Italy and Albania by coach Julen Lopetegui.

After spending the first few weeks on the bench, Herrera has forced his way into United’s starting XI under Jose Mourinho and has forged a promising partnership with Paul Pogba.

Tim Sherwood Open To Aston Villa Return

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 11:34 PM PDT

Tim Sherwood says he would consider a second spell in charge of Aston Villa after Roberto Di Matteo was sacked with the club sitting 19th in the Championship table.

The former Spurs coach worked under former chairman Randy Lerner. But while he doesn’t know new owner Dr Tony Xia, Sherwood would be keen to discuss the role with the new chairman.

Sherwood said: “I don't know these owners. I was there under a different regime.

“The guy I was with (Randy Lerner) wanted out so it was a really difficult situation for me.

When you go into a club where someone where someone wants to really pick it up and take it forward then it's a great opportunity for any young manager.

“I'd be no different to anyone else (in being interested).”

Balotelli: I Have No Rapport With Klopp

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 11:02 PM PDT

Mario Balotelli has revealed he has no relationship whatsoever with Jurgen Klopp, whose only instruction to him was to leave the Reds on loan.

The Italy forward was brought to Anfield by Brendan Rodgers in 2015 and was sent back to Milan on loan, after he failed to make a mark with Liverpool.

He is now playing for Nice – where he has scored six goals in his first five games – after leaving Liverpool on a free transfer late in the summer window.

And Balotelli has revealed that there was never any chance of him making a comeback at Anfield due to his non-existent rapport with Klopp.

“Klopp? I don’t know him,” Balotelli told Sky Sport Italia. “He just told me to leave Liverpool on loan and then to come back. I said: ‘Thanks, bye.'”

A Common Sense Response To Peter Obi And Abdulmumin Jibrin’s Confessions

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 02:29 PM PDT

A Common Sense Response To Peter Obi And Abdulmumin Jibrin's Confessions, By Simbo Olorunfemi

It is almost impossible to catch our political elite in this game at which they are masters, unless by some miracle there is an implosion in their ranks. Unless and until there is a willingness on the part of some of them to commit political hara-kiri, the best we get are occasional glimpses into the intrigues, desperation and volume of waste that is put to play in the power-game in the circles of the elite. There is so much that the ordinary man suspects of happenings in government, but there is very little he knows of a certainty. But when there is drama in the camp, we get to know about the workings of the Okija shrines and the use to which public resources are put to.

This piece was written by Simbo Olurunfemi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

When Donald Duke, years back, in a profound moment of epiphany, opened up on the intricacies that make it almost impossible to have free and fair elections in Nigeria, many were shocked. He explained how it was that the INEC State Commissioner could not but be susceptible to the tunes of the governor, as the system was designed to make him practically dependent on the governor for upkeep and the meeting of routine needs of the Commission in the state. That was before the introduction of the PVC and card-reader, but how much things have really changed is better left to the imagination. But if what we saw in many of the states in the 2015 elections, with Electoral Commissioners acting hand-in-glove with governors, not much might have changed.

In the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin has been on a roll for a while now. He seems not only to be on a mission for immolation but to bring the 'house' down with him. Some say he is no hero and that he is only on this suicide mission for his own selfish interest, as he was a major part of the rot he is exposing. Perhaps, they have a point there. But who says he is one? That you blow the whistle does not necessarily make you one. But it does take plenty of guts and sacrifice to be a whistle-blower, especially in our clime. Edward Snowden and Julian Assange are seeing first-hand what it means to stand up to vested interests, in another part of the world.

In the case of Jibrin, it will be most foolish to throw this baby away with the bath-water. In fact, this baby deserves all the care and protection he can get to ensure the bath water is properly drained and processed accordingly. For who else but an insider, especially one of Jibrin's standing, could have unearthed the level of rot that is now in the open?

Have you noticed that the National Assembly has functioned more like a cult where members take an oath to never disclose anything to do with their salaries and allowances, even with the gun to their heads? It is that troubling that once there is an outcry about happenings in the Assembly, it is usually the ex-members of the club who often show up in a stout defence of the National Assembly. Regardless of party lines, they are usually the most vociferous defenders of acts that not even hardened criminals will find justification for. But for a few we know who are not cut of this cloth, one might be tempted to conclude that the water in the National Assembly is laced with something else.

The levity with which the leadership of the two arms of the Assembly handle allegations of corruption and misconduct is such that one would think there is something in their Rule Book that assures them they are above the laws of the land. They leisurely stroll back and forth from courts, carrying on like they only visited the loo. Direct allegations of graft have been made against the Speaker of the House of Representatives and he has simply waved them off, as if they do not matter. Of course, they don't.

He is not bothered, he says. He needs not be. He does not even need to humour us with an explanation. The question of resignation does not arise for him. He only needs to carry on exactly as he has been doing. The lead antagonist, Jibrin, has been banished from the hallowed chambers for 180 days. That will likely take more than a year, as the House hardly ever meets the constitutional requirement on the number of days it ought to sit in a year. If, with all that is in the open, members of the National Assembly will rather rally around the leadership and dig in to save themselves, what other evidence does anyone need of the depth of decay within their ranks?

It is within the context of that conspiracy of silence among the political elite that the speech by Governor Peter Obi at 'The Platform' on October 1 sits. You might need to have experienced government or be privy to its inner working for you to properly situate the exposé. It is a surprise that he was able to survive eight years in government without any other 'incident' beyond attempted impeachment, for he clearly stepped on too many entrenched and powerful toes in the civil service and political class, with the way he claimed to have run the affairs of the state.

The governor is like a god with such an elaborate temple built for him, where so many people feed, steal and waste, in pretence at pleasing him; while in reality, many more are benefiting from the institutionalisation of corruption.

Apart from the liaison offices in Abuja and Lagos maintained by many of the states, many of the State governors have the Presidential Lodge and a chain of guest houses in their State capitals, maintained at enormous expense to the government. These guest houses receive regular supply of diesel to power them, with cooks and maintenance crews catering to the needs of the residents. Most of the guests are friends of governors, friends of the friends of governors and friends of public officials. Many are resident there almost all-year round, fed and catered for, at enormous cost to the people. And that is simply how government works.

There is such an alarming culture of waste in government, with the same replicated by the different arms of government, parastatals and many of the MDAs at the federal level, that you might be forced to ask yourself if the country has not been cursed. What Governor Peter Obi did was to confirm public suspicion in graphic details. To see what use he claimed to have put savings made from his simple, common-sense measures in cutting the cost of governance and what difference it made in performance and quality of lives of the people is sobering.

Indeed, the immense power that goes with executive office in Nigeria, protected by a culture of waste and corruption is such that without political suicide in the ranks of the elite, it is almost impossible to penetrate it. That is why the insight by Peter Obi is important, if we can manage to keep our eyes on the ball.

Some are already querying his motives, questioning his politics and the morality of his engagement with President Jonathan. Fair enough. I am not a big fan of his politics either. I do not know what to make of his inability to grow APGA beyond how he met it. I will not pretend to understand the decision to commit political suicide by leave his party for the PDP. I cannot explain too how come he could not share his 'araldite' philosophy with President Jonathan, or at least influence the man he vigorously campaigned for, even employing some unfair tactics in the process.

However, I have known him, for a while too, as a man of means, who from what one had heard, which he has now confirmed, has chosen to live modestly and conduct himself in line with principles and values that were once cherished and celebrated in this land. It is also good to hear that he manages his family in accordance with the same principles, not indulging the children, as seems to be the fashion even for many less-endowed than the man.

Now, that old-school philosophy of frugality with a common-sense approach to the management of public funds is most needed at this time, with the downturn in revenue. A Peter Obi surgical knife to cut the cost of governance might be of use to President Buhari with him coming on-board to head a Due Process and Good Governance Commission. He should be able to strip government of all the frills, leave bare essentials and deliver on savings of trillions of naira that can be put to good use. If only the man can be cloned, would it not do wonders for another version of him to be sent to the National Assembly to shake the place up and save the nation billions expended on waste?

For now, Abdulmumin Jibrin is doing his bit, in hope that law enforcement agencies will finally step in to help the Speaker share with us how he can be so calm and confident in the face of such allegations flying all around. Abdulmumin Jibrin is no hero. He has not laid claim to being one. Not every whistle-blower is. No one says Peter Obi is a hero. But we need to do all we can to promote and encourage whistle-blowing within the ranks of the power elite. Without an implosion and many more committing to political suicide, it will be difficult to make an appreciable dent on the stranglehold of corruption.

Bayelsa Schools Remain Shut As Teachers Strike Over 7 Months’ Salary Arrears

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 02:06 PM PDT

Public primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa have yet to resume for the 2016/2017 session because of the failure of the state government to settle their seven months salary arrears.

The teachers embarked on a strike at the end of the 2015/2016 long vacation which ended in the first week of September.

The Bayelsa chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in a statement on Monday advised teachers to stay at home till their demands were met.

The union said the industrial action became inevitable after the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum to the government on Sept. 19.

In a statement signed by the state Chairman of NUT, Mr. Kalaama Toinpre, and Secretary, Mr. Johnson Hector, the teachers condemned alleged efforts to factionalise the union.

The union said it remained the legally recognised body charged with the responsibility of agitating for the welfare of primary and secondary school teachers.

The union expressed regret that the government had reneged on an earlier agreement reached in May to pay half salaries to its workers pending improvements in the finances of the state.

It said that the state government had only paid teachers their January salary in full and half salary in February, thereby leaving arrears of seven months.

The state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Markson Fefegha, said the government had been meeting with the teachers to resolve the issues raised by the teachers.

He said, "We have been meeting with the executive of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, I have been explaining to them our efforts so far in meeting our salary obligations."

31 Sentenced To Death In Tunisia For Attack On Minister

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 01:43 PM PDT

At least 31 persons have been sentenced to death by a Tunisia court over an attack on the resident of the then interior minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou in 2014, a judiciary spokesman said on Monday.

The Associated Press gathered that the 31 accused persons – mainly Algerians and Tunisians – were sentenced in absentia with some reported to be already dead.

In 2014, militants of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb had claimed responsibility for the attack on the minister's family home in the western border region of Kasserine, which left four police officers dead.

The minister was however not at home as at the time of the attack.

Those convicted were found guilty of "wilful homicide and membership of a terrorist group" and were also sentenced to 36 years in prison.

A total of 46 people were prosecuted over the attack, said the spokesman for Tunis district court, Sofiene Sliti.

Among the 15 remaining defendants, eight were sentenced to between three and 10 years in jail for "membership of a terrorist group" and "involvement in terrorism-related matters".

The court, which issued the rulings on Friday, dismissed cases against the remaining seven, Sliti told AFP.

Among the 31 sentenced to death were Seifallah Ben Hassine, an associate of late Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and founder of the jihadist group Ansar al-Sharia.

West Brom Manager Tony Pulis Wants Another Chadli

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 08:21 AM PDT

Tony Pulis reckons West Brom need more players like Nacer Chadli’s after bemoaning his team's lack of killer instinct, the Express and Star reports.

"I thought it was a good display right through the team," Pulis said

"I don't think they had too many opportunities and chances.

"I'm just desperately disappointed for the players.

"They worked so hard as a group.

"We could have maybe done with two or three Chadlis in that final third to give us that second or third goal because we dominated at times,” he said. “When we've got in there we've just lacked that little bit of quality.”

Chadli, who provided two assists in the 4-2 win over West Ham, cost West Brom a club-record £13 million.

Given the extortionate sums of money changing hands, the Belgian is beginning to look one of the bargains of the season.

Sevilla To Offer Steven N’Zonzi New Contract

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 07:42 AM PDT

Sevilla are preparing a new deal for midfielder Steven N’Zonzi as they look to ward of interest from the likes of Everton, according to Spanish newspaper Estadio Deportivo.

The Toffees director of football Steve Walsh is big fan of the Frenchman and wants him at Goodion Park, but the La Liga side’s sporting director Monchi has made a fresh contract for N’Zonzi his main priority.

Everton director of football Steve Walsh is a big fan of N’Zonzi, who made 195 Premier League appearances across his spells at Blackburn Rovers and then Stoke.

It was reported that Walsh attempted to land N’Zonzi while he was still at Leicester and now wants to sign him at Everton, where he became director of football in July.

However they may face a tough task in prising him away from Sevilla, who want to keep him at any cost.

James Milner : Jurgen Klopp One Of The Best

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 07:34 AM PDT

James Milner rates Jurgen Klopp among the best managers he has worked with in a 14-year professional career.

“I’ve probably had too many managers but every manager is different,” said Milner, quoted in Monday’s Daily Telegraph. “They all have their own strengths and weaknesses.

“He [Klopp] is a top manager and he’s definitely one of the best that I have worked with. His organisation sessions are different to anything else that I have ever experienced.

“His passion can only be a good thing. Sometimes, when he is bouncing on the touchline with enthusiasm, the only thing you could say is that he is maybe too emotional.”

That was not the case at the weekend when a forensic analysis of his side’s first-half failings sparked a revival which earned Liverpool maximum points in south Wales.

“He held it in just enough,” Milner said. “We knew he was angry, you could tell, but he still put his words across well.

“It’s easy to fly off the handle and not be very productive. We know how emotional he is but he did a great job. He said the right things and we came out and performed how we should.

“He deserves a lot of credit. He is top manager. He has proved that before and hopefully we can be very successful with him.”

Everton Target Rachid Ghezzal Set To Sign New Lyon Contract

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 07:20 AM PDT

Reported Everon target Rachid Ghezzal is close to signing a new three-year deal with Lyon, according to French newspaper L'Equipe.

It was reported in the summer that the Toffees offered him a €400,000 per month (£348,700) salary but he turned it down to stay at his boyhood club, where he scored his first goal of the season over the weekend during a 2-0 win over Saint Etienne.

according to French sports daily L’Equipe, Ghezzal is close to signing a new three-year deal, to keep him at the club and end any speculation he may be leaving in the winter window, when Everton could have rekindled their interest.

Les Gones now sit in fifth spot in the French top flight, with 13 points from their opening eight games.

Next up for Lyon after the international break is a trip to play Nice.

Joe Hart Linked With Move To Chelsea

Posted: 03 Oct 2016 07:04 AM PDT

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Manchester City outcast Joe Hart, the Daily Star reports.

The newspaper reports that Antonio Conte was spotted watching the Torino goalkeeper in action against Fiorentina yesterday, with current number one Thibaut Courtois struggling between the sticks.

The report claims the 47-year-old may have been keeping a close eye on on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Hart.

The England international, who was named in Gareth Southgate's squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, is impressing in Serie A after Pep Guardiola deemed him surplus to requirements at the Etihad.

And with Thibaut Courtois struggling to perform well consistently, Conte could be widening his search for another shot-stopper.

However, there were other players involved in the game that have been linked to Chelsea, including Torino’s Andrea Belotti and Fiorentina’s Nikola Kalinic.
